Well Rehabilitation

What is it?

Well rehabilitation ( ROP) is a process where the original parameters of the water front are restored, from the point of extraction to the hydraulic structure. To do this, the geological and hydromorphological characteristics and patterns along the water front must be taken into account.

The benefits are:

• The operational difficulties are resolved and the system's performance is improved.
• Problems caused by improper functioning, such as harm to third parties, are avoided.
• The well is regaining its productive capacity.

To obtain these benefits, a system cleaning process must be followed. Ideally, this should be done at the well site, at least for the first fifteen meters, to determine if conditions are favorable.

How is Well Rehabilitation Carried Out?

The analysis stage consists of collecting hydrometric and geological data from the well. This phase is a comprehensive process to determine the overall condition of the system, from the surface to the bottom.

Usually, two or three tests are carried out per day for several consecutive days with regular intervals between them, depending on the area to be treated and the characteristics of the terrain.

A first record is made at the surface, another at the first few meters of depth, and the third record is made at the tips.

The next step is system cleaning, which may consist of several parts:

Chemical treatments to eliminate bacteria.Acidity and even cracks.De-escalation with coarse sand to facilitate subsequent improvement by natural washing if necessary.Injection of neutral or alkaline products (such as caustic soda) to soften calcareous sediments, among others.

Next, the well is washed with pressurized water to remove all residue, and finally, it is tested again at the surface as well as at the wellhead. This information is used to determine whether the rehabilitation was successful or not.

In any case, the cleaning process must be repeated before fully restarting normal system production.
