Hydrological Studies: How Are They Carried Out?

What are they?

A hydrological study is the method used to measure the geological and physical characteristics of a site. Scientists conduct this study to determine if the soil is suitable and can support the needs of a project.

The most important characteristic of soil is its hydrological properties, which are deduced from topographic and geological data obtained in the field. This is done using cartographic information, aerial photographs, digital maps, or satellite imagery.

Main objective of hydrological studies

The main objective of the study is to determine the permeability conditions of the soil, that is, whether or not there is infiltration in the soil and the infiltration rate.

How to Conduct a Hydrological Study

The study is conducted throughout the entire irrigation network, from wells and pumping stations to pipelines. For it to be considered a hydrological study, data on water usage for each source must be obtained.

Then parameters such as the following are calculated: flow rate provided by each system or aquifer, distribution pressure, potential evapotranspiration, and localized burning demand within that same area.

This data is obtained through tests that measure capillarity (the ability to absorb water), tensiometers (which determine the force with which a liquid is attracted), and conductivity meters (which directly measure flow). Additional complementary hydraulic studies, such as ring tests and pumping tests, will also be necessary.

If the land does not show infiltration, a complementary hydraulic study will be carried out to determine if there are aquifers in the area (groundwater).
