Groundwater is a natural resource found beneath the Earth's surface. It is found worldwide, and its presence is determined by a location's topography, climate, and geology.

If you're interested in drilling a well , you need to learn about one of the most important layers of aquifers : the water table . Here you'll find everything you need to know about it—keep reading!

Frequently Asked Questions About the Water Table

  • What is the water table?

The water table is also known as the phreatic level, groundwater table, or water table. It can be defined as the surface where the pressure of the water table and the atmospheric pressure are equal.

In general, the water table has a similar relief to the surface, but smoother. It can eventually rise to the surface, forming deposits of free water.

  • Where is the water table located?

Below the water table lies groundwater. This saturates the soil pores and is also called the "zone of saturation." Water in transit within the pores and larger cracks of the soil is known as gravitational water and is typically found in the zone of saturation.

Above the water table, soil pores can contain air or water, and this zone is called the "aeration zone." Within this zone, hygroscopic water adheres in a thin layer around the soil grains, and capillary water is also found in the smallest pores.

  • Importance of the Water Table in Wells

The water table level is important for calculating well productivity before or during drilling. This level is also necessary to explain changes in the flow of streams and springs, thus justifying variations in lake levels.

The water table level varies depending on the season. This is because the amount of groundwater is linked to the amount and frequency of rainfall.
